Hope all is well with all of you. Did you realize that Christmas is only two months away? Yikes - time to get started on those Christmas knitting and crochet projects. Anyone making Christmas stockings for the family? I thought I would but now find my project list too long. As always, too many projects, never enough time. But, don't forget to work in a little charity knitting/crocheting in between all of those gifts and personal projects. You'll be amazed at how your Christmas spirit abounds, knowing that you are making something for someone else.

Here is what is going on with YOH this week.

Meetings:
* Tuesday - 10AM in the Hospitality Room at FBC McKinney
* Wednesday - 6:15PM in the Fireside Room at FBC McKinney

* We may be sending some children and teen hats to Sierra Leone after the first of the year.
* We are working on making contact with the NICU unit at the new Baylor Hospital in McKinney.

Finch Knitting/Crochet Club - We are in full swing with at least 12 excited boys and girls - it's amazing how quickly they are catching on after just two lessons. We can still use more teachers though - there were only 3 teachers this past week and we could have used at least 4-5. If you are interested at all, please let me or Becca Masters know. You don't need to do it every week or be an expert knitter/crocheter to help. You will also need to fill out a volunteer background check at www.mckinneyisd.net.

So, I don't recommend this one, but I've discovered another way to get in a little extra knitting time - sitting home with your kiddo while he recovers from strep throat! Not a lot of fun for anyone involved but you do have to stay home. And, that's a great chance to catch up on some knitting (or, in my case, browsing the internet for my next project!).

Yarns of Hope Bible Study started this last week. We had about 15 ladies who joined us, about half of which were new to YOH and knitting/crocheting. We had a great time getting to know each other and talking about what we will be doing this semester. This week, we will be starting the book and learning about God's purpose for each of our lives. Did you know that we can often our purpose by examining what we are passionate about?

Finch Knitting/Crochet Club - We have already been contacted by the 5th grade teacher at Finch, expressing interest in continuing the knitting club this year. And, make sure you check out the Jo-Ann Fabrics grand opening on August 9-11! How exciting - a new place to shop for yarn and goodies!

We will be studying the Debbie Macomber book, Knit Together: Discover God's Pattern for Your Life. This study will give us a chance to explore God's unique purpose for each of our lives while still indulging in our favorite pasttime - knitting/crocheting/sewing for those in need of hope and warmth. This will also allow us to reach a whole new set of ladies that have either never heard of YOH or were not able to attend because of lack of childcare. If you are hesitant because you don't think you have time for one more thing- I chose this book because we will be reading only one chapter each week, no study questions, and then discussing the chapter on Wednesday mornings. The books may be purchased the first day of bible study or ordered online - try Amazon or <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Half.com<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. mother. We have decided to meet at Orchard Park Assisted Living (where Ms.
Bessie lives) next Tuesday morning. This will give us a chance to see her (she
hasn't felt like coming to the church for our meetings for the past several
weeks) as well as meet some of her friends there. What a great chance to
fellowship with a whole new group of people!

This is the second year Yarns of Hope members volunteered their time teaching during the students' recess break throughout the school year. Organized by Becca Masters, she helped schedule time between the class as well as volunteers. There were several consistent students who took up the craft and stayed all year learnng how to make squares.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This year, there was a specific goal in mind when teaching the students how to knit: how to give of their time and talents. Many of the students at Finch Elementary are low-income families. They are used to receiving meals, rides, clothes, etc. Yarns of Hope wanted these students to know what it feels like to not only receive but to give in return. While the students learned how a new talent in the hopes of carrying this throughout their life, squares were made and then joined to make a group blanket.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This blanket was then decided by the "designers" who to give this to. The class wanted to give this to one of their teachers who is pregnant.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Yarns of Hope would love to teach a new batch of 5th graders next year, but we need your help! Volunteering for an hour a week is needed from 4-5 knitters/crocheters to help give more one-on-one training and speed up the tutoring process. Please consider donating your time in the fall and see young future crafters learn what we ourselves have become so passionate about.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Many thanks, Becca for organizing this year! This program has certainly made an impact for years to come!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and is enjoying the hot weather. Speaking of, with the warmer weather, it is time to switch to lighter weight yarns, especially cotton, for the hats and scarves.

Cancer patients still get cold during the summertime (esp. in the air conditioning) and they also need some sun protection for their heads. However, they don't need the thick and fuzzy yarns that are so great during the cold months. A lightweight acrylic or cotton yarn is perfect.

Meetings this week:

Tuesday - 10AM in the Hospitality Room at FBC McKinney

Wednesday - 6:15PM in the Fireside Room at FBC McKinney

Summer schedule:

Our Tuesday meetings will stay the same. If you have kids, bring them along. For Wednesday night meetings, the Children's Ministry has cancelled our childcare for this Wednesday. It will resume in August when all of the regular Wednesday night activities resume. We WILL have meetings for most of the summer and I will let you know if there are any nights the building is closed. Same as Tuesdays - bring the kids along.

Current Projects:

Chemo caps and scarves - for adults, kids and babies. To be donated to Texas Oncology McKinney, Medical City Children's Hospital, and UT Southwestern Moncrief Center.

Blankets and knitted/crocheted toys - to be donated to Medical City Children's Hospital.

Bereavement Preemie Items: Gowns, sweaters, hats, and blankets to be donated to Medical City Children's Hospital Labor & Delivery Department. Items should be in pastel colors and sized for a 2 pound preemie. Also, the nurses have requested 2 or 3 gowns or sweaters in a newborn size. Let me know if you need help with patterns or sizing.

Have a great week and God bless each of you.

In addition to browsing and purchasing some beautiful yarns for new and exciting projects, Diane also gave us a demonstration on finger knitting and how using the i-cord technique can be incorporated with other novelty yarns in new trendy projects such as scarves and wraps.

Looking forward to the next field trip and seeing all the wonderful projects come to life from these exciting yarns!

Hope everyone is doing great and looking forward to cooler weather later this week!! I made a trip to Medical City Children's Hospital and UT Southwestern and donated a bunch of hats, scarves, blankets and toys, etc. The nurses and staff were so appreciative of all of our hard work - thanks to each of you who helped make this possible.

Mark your calendars - our field trip to Fiber Circle in Farmersville is next Tuesday, May 15th. We will meet at the church at 10 and then carpool out there.

Meetings this week:
• Tuesday - 10AM in the Hospitality Room at FBCMcKinney
• Wednesday - 6:15PM in the HOSPITALITY Room at FBCMcKinney (NOTE ROOM CHANGE)

Summer schedule: Our Tuesday meetings will stay the same. If you have kids, bring them along. For Wednesday night meetings, the church's regular activities are finished as of LAST week. We will have childcare through May 23rd.

We WILL have meetings for most of the summer and I will let you know if there are any nights the building is closed. Same as Tuesdays - bring the kids along.

Current Projects:
• Chemo caps and scarves - for adults, kids and babies. To be donated to Texas Oncology McKinney, Medical City Children's Hospital, and UT Southwestern Moncrief Center.
• Blankets and knitted/crocheted toys - to be donated to Medical City Children's Hospital.
• Bereavement Preemie Items: Gowns, sweaters, hats, and blankets to be donated to Medical City Children's Hospital Labor & Delivery Department. Items should be in pastel colors and sized for a 2 pound preemie. Also, the nurses have requested 2 or 3 gowns or sweaters in a newborn size. Let me know if you need help with patterns or sizing.

Have a great week and God bless each of you!

With only 144 days left until the State Fair, it's never too early to start
craving those Fletcher Corny Dogs, plan for TX/OU weekend or even visit the
women's exhibit hall to see what other crafters have proudly been working on for
the past year for the rest of us to ooooh and ahhh over.

The official
Creative Arts Handbook has been mailed out and has been received by crafters who
are squealing with delight. For those that attended the fair last year and have
decided that this is the year that they are going to submit, here is your
chance!

This year the theme is Big & Bright and what a great theme it
is as us Texans love to live up to the song! There are 124 pages worth of
instruction and entry information; enough to make one calculate how many entries
one person can submit (over 1100 categories in case you were
wondering!)

As a disclaimer, more information about each category and
entry forms can be found online at State Fair Creative Arts Competition Handbook but below
